Founded
in 1978 by Greensboro native, Sarah Walden Herbin, the Black
Child Development Institute of Greensboro, Inc. is
one of 33 affiliates of the National Black Child Development
Institute. On the national level, NBCDI has four main program
goals: child
health,
child welfare, education and public policy advocacy.
The Black Child Development
Institute of Greensboro responds to the needs of children by
providing direct service programs, activities and events which
enhance and improve the quality of life of children and families.
In addition, BCDI-G members serve on boards and commissions which
affect the lives of children and families.
Black
Child Development Institute of Greensboro utilizes a cadre of
volunteers to provide
direct service programs, community forums, and workshops for
children, youth and families. Thousands of volunteers have
been
matched
with
elementary,
middle
and high
school students to improve academic performance, bolster
self-esteem and revitalize
the
spirit of
volunteerism in the African American community. Governed by a
15-member board of directors, BCDI-G has been a catalyst
for change in the Greater Greensboro community. The Black Child
Development Institute of Greensboro, is a member agency
of United Way of Greater Greensboro.
BCDI-G recruits, screens
and trains volunteers to provide direct services to children
and youth, and to serve as advocates for monitoring legislation
and public policy pertaining to children and youth.
