The
Academy for Sports and Computational Explorations in Science
(ASCES) is a collaborative
project of North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University
(NC A&T SU), the Black Child Development Institute of Greensboro
(BCDI-G) and the Hayes Taylor YMCA (H-TYMCA). The goal of the academy
is to engage area middle and high school students in sports activities
coupled with an exploratory, hands-on, scientific discovery in
the mathematics and science curriculum, and to empower parents
to positively impact their childrens’ education. The Academy
is designed to excite, encourage and enable participants to ultimately
pursue degrees and careers in science, technology, engineering,
and mathematics (STEM).
The ASCES program brings
together 6th through 8th grade students, college students, faculty,
research scientists,
and parents in
distinct summer and academic year components. The academic year
component consists of after-school and weekend supervised sports,
laboratory science and mathematics activities, enrichment workshops,
and continuous supplemental academic assistance for 40 participants.
The summer component consists of a residential four-week ASCES
Summer Institute, which engages eight ASCES Fellows in a guided
exposure to the practice of computational science in research applications
such as mathematical biology, aerodynamics, and climate studies;
most are selected from the academic year program. Besides focused
exploratory research projects in one of these application areas,
the summer curriculum also includes sports, workshops, math and
science enrichment, and field trips.
