The
Spirit of Excellence Tutorial Program is a multifaceted
academic enrichment program designed to improve performance
of participating Guilford County School students in grades
one through twelve. It seeks to improve academic performance,
bolster self-esteem, and revitalize the spirit of volunteerism
in the African American community. The program recruits,
screens, and trains adults as volunteer academic tutors.
Utilizing a training manual designed to improve overall
skills with an emphasis on reading, volunteers are trained
to provide such assistance.
Spirit
of Excellence operates ten tutorial sites throughout Greensboro,
all
located in public places
including churches, public housing communities, branches
of the Greensboro Public Library, the campus of North Carolina
A & T State University, and the Hayes Taylor YMCA. A
trained adult site monitor supervises each tutorial site
and serves as the liaison between the Institute and the site
participants, parents, and community.
A special component of the tutorial program is "The
Algebra Project," a tutorial site devoted to meeting
the needs of students in higher math courses such as algebra,
geometry, and trigonometry.
